Homemade Sloppy Joes

Ingredients
1 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 pound ground beef
1/3 green bell pepper, minced
1/2 large yellow onion, minced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon tomato paste
2/3 cup ketchup
1/3 cup water
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
3/4 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional
dash of hot sauce, optional
Directions
In a large skillet, heat butter and oil over medium/medium-high heat . When butter has melted, add beef, crumbling it as it cooks, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a colander to drain fat.
Add onion and bell pepper and cook until softened, 2-3 minutes. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds, or until fragrant.
Add beef back into the skillet, add tomato paste and stir well. Add ketchup, water, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper and red pepper flakes, if using). Stir well to combine.
Cook over medium heat for 10-15 minutes, until mixture has thickened to your desired consistency. Serve on toasted buns, with a dash of hot sauce, if desired.
Recipe Notes:
To freeze: Allow the meat to cool completely, then place in an airtight container in the freezer and freeze for up to 4 months. To serve, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat before serving.
